Introduction:

The twentieth century is the age of modern science which has discovered different type of wonders and has brought very far reaching changes in everyday life. Gone are the days and automation is the order of the day due to the advent of science. The generation of 21st century stand at a point, where we are fortunate enough to witness some of the most amazing technological advancements ever in history. This is the age of modern technology which beckons the human beings to start a new world. Every now and then, some innovation is built which creates a craze equally all over the globe. This made Bill Gates say: “The PC (Personal Computer) has improved the world in just about every area you can think of. Amazing developments in communications……. New kinds of entertainment and social medias. Access to information and the ability to give a voice people who would never have been heard.”


What is social media?

Social media is the social interaction among people which they create, share or exchange information and ideas in virtual communities and networks. Social media basically means the communication or sharing of information which is possible through mobile, tablet or computer. Social media is that the collective of online communications channels dedicated to community-based input, interaction, content-sharing and collaboration. Many social medias have been introduced such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Google+, WhatsApp etc. But, out of these, Facebook is the mostly used social media in the world with more than 2 billion accounts. 


Advantages of Social Media:

Social media is one of the most prominent platforms of sharing information. People from the corner of the world can receive and send information through the social media. Social media allows us to connect with the people of various culture, languages, and religions throughout the world. Social media is also a big hit among many companies who use their sites as a networking tool to generate awareness about their products, promote their brand, win over customers and thereby increase their sales. It saves their costs of marketing and advertising. Consumers can directly communicate with sellers and are offered better services. Together all this has given media as consumer-generated media.

Social media plays an important role in every student's life. It is also a good tool for education. The utilization of web-based social networking in education gives students the capacity to access information, provide information and to associate with learning groups and other educational systems that make education convenient. Many teachers and students are connected to each other & can make a good use of these platforms for the working of their education. They easily share study related notes, articles and other institutional information through the social media. Nowadays, many professors and teachers are conduction live classroom program through Skype, Zoom or other platforms. This makes it simple for students just as educator to learn and share while simply sitting in their homes. The classes led via web-based networking media stages are more disciplined as we realize that everybody is viewing.

With an increase in the popularity of social media among people, we just can't ignore its importance not even in politics and elections. It helps politicians run campaigns and reach the mass audience with a single click of a mouse button. All they need is the content that engages their audience. Social media plays vital role during the time of election. It helps the citizens get to know about many information about the politicians as most of the politicians are active users of Twitter. Even Barack Obama, the former President of USA began the re-election campaign for 2012 elections through popular online mediums such as Facebook and Twitter.


Disadvantages of Social Media:

Social media is beyond and above the barrier of distance, colour, creed, age, culture or income level. Indulgence in Social media is highly addictive. As Bryan Adams has said “Social media is a giant distraction to the ultimate aim …………the time is better spent on a clever lyric than a clever tweet.   

Social media is a great medium of communication, but the negative effects of social media can affect us in many ways. So, the excessive use of social media is not at all advisable. It is a reason of poor mental development in children. It is such a bug which is affecting the children in a high scale. Nowadays the students are getting so busy in social media that they are not interested to concentrate in study and therefore they are going dull day by day.
Anyone’s personal data can be easily hacked through the social media if not properly secured and can be shared all over the internet which may put the users in difficulties. The hacker may misuse their private property. Honey traps and MMS porn are the most caused frauds online. People are lured in to relationships and love schemes and then they are cheated on.

The excessive use of social media also affects our physical and mental health. It damages our eyes, make us lazy and affect our brain which is a reason of headache. According to a survey, most of the children have become victims of the cyberbulling over the past. Since anyone can create a fake account and do anything without being traced, it has become quite easy for anyone to bully on the Internet. Threats, intimidation messages and rumors can be sent to the masses to create discomfort and chaos in the society.  


Conclusion:

Everything has both advantages and disadvantages. But the disadvantages of social media are very harmful to us. So, we should be very careful about it and should try to reduce the use of social media. Then, we will be able to enjoy its advantages.
